Fun, Fantasy, and Fanfare with Flowers, Sogetsu School’s 33rd annual Rose Show, was held at the Japanese Garden Pavilion on June 6 – 7, 2003. The theme matched that of the Rose Festival and encouraged arrangers to let their creativity show through beautiful arrangements featuring roses.

This year’s show featured a Renka Workshop on Friday evening, June 6. Renka is a relatively new concept used by the Sogetsu School, and was taught here last fall by Koka Fukushima, a teacher from the Sogetsu headquarters in Tokyo. Each team of arrangers created an arrangement on the stage. Then, all arrangements were linked together with bamboo to create one large arrangement that became a highlight of the exhibition.

Other arrangements featured unusual materials such as copper tubing, wire mesh, feathers, fiber optic flowers that glowed softly, and containers made by arrangers’ spouses. Unfortunately, the extremely hot weather necessitated replacing drooping flowers each morning.

Keiko Kodachi is the long-term Branch Director of the Portland Sogetsu Branch. Her arrangement featured flowers representing a Japanese fairy tale. Carmen Sivertson did a lovely arrangement as a memorial to Mary Nakadake.

Mary Dickson was this year’s Rose Show Chairman assisted by Hideko Hearn. Donna Tanaka, Amy Lu, and Mary Dickson did demonstrations to educate visitors. Lois Bosland was the liaison with the Rose Festival Association.
