Happy New Year of the Horse! Sogetsu Portland celebrated the new year at a festive Polynesian-inspired luncheon on January 25, 2014, at the Riverside Golf and Country Club. Branch Director conducted a short general meeting prior to the lunch and members mingled with guests and members from Ikebana International.

Attendees also enjoyed viewing the five large, Polynesian-themed ikebana that adorned the stage area. Thanks to Don Davidson, Nana Bellerud, Diantha Knott, Judy Jensen and Rebecca Teasdale for using tropical flowers, tiki wood and seashells in their inspiring creations!

The special menu included an appetizer of Chawan Mushi, Sunomon and Kabu. The entrée was Karabuta Pork Three Ways with shiso-wrapped and marinated tenderloin, wrapped Kalua pork and pork harumaki. Dessert was a special Key Lime Pie with coconut meringue and macadamia cookie crust. Totemo oishikatta desu!

Leslie Dolin and her students, Amy Stahl and Kathleen Kuba, provided table centerpieces using banana flowers, orchids, coconuts sprayed gold, miniature bananas, rambutan, ginger, lotus leaves and other exotic material. Some guests even peeled the rambutan to get a taste of the lychee-like fruit!

After the luncheon, Amy Stahl and two other dancers from her hula family, Hui O Hoaloha Hula, performed lovely dances as the featured entertainment and convinced everyone to schedule a visit to the Hawaiian Islands. Thank you to Amy, Toni and Carlah for magically transporting us to the tropical islands of Hawaii to smell the rose lei, picture rainy mountain ranges and swaying coconut fronds, and feel the sea spray on our cheeks!
